33 - Fremdsprachen / The History and Culture of Australia
You know the stereotype: Australia is this beautiful place where everyone is relaxed, friendly and living the dream. But is that just clever marketing? Is there another side to Australia and what would Australians say are the most interesting aspects of their own culture?

We will look at the history of Australia to understand how these people think and behave. It is an expedition into a remote, sometimes weird and yet sophisticated society. Drawing upon sport, music, art, tourism, language and Aboriginal culture, we will discover who Australians really are.
Session 1: Australia's Aboriginal Culture, Ancient and Modern.
Session 2: Convicts and Bushrangers: The Formation of Modern Australian Identity.
Session 3: Soldiers, Poets and Sporting Heroes: A Study of the Contemporary Australian Character.
In addition to these topics, we will regularly discuss language issues, such as the way Australian English differs from British English, and how accents function as a marker of class distinctions in Australia.
All sessions are based on group research into the history and culture of Australia, in-class reading/viewing to deepen awareness of specific topics, and plenum discussions.
By the end of the course, participants will have gained a thorough knowledge of Australian history and culture, and will understand what the formative influences on Australian identity have been. They will also be able to distinguish between some basic varieties of Australian accent and will have learnt some (hilarious) vocabulary, unique to Australia. They will have gathered information on topics relevant to Australia that they could use to develop English lessons for their own classrooms, including some material that might be applicable at B1.2 to B2.2 levels.
